Setting Off from Chunxi Road
I left the hotel shortly after breakfast and took a taxi to the panda base. The journey took around half an hour, and I arrived shortly after the park opened. Visiting early is highly recommended, as giant pandas are most active in the cooler morning hours before they retreat for their afternoon naps.

Adorable Panda Cubs at the Sunshine Nursery House
My first destination was the nursery, where young panda cubs were drawing large crowds. Watching the cubs clumsily climb wooden structures, wrestle with one another, and tumble from low platforms was both amusing and heartwarming.

Some cubs were busy exploring their surroundings, while others were contentedly sleeping in piles, completely unconcerned by the excited visitors nearby. The nursery provided a fascinating glimpse into the early stages of panda development and highlighted the success of the breeding programme.

Exploring the Giant Panda Enclosures
Beyond the nursery, I spent the next few hours exploring the various giant panda enclosures scattered throughout the park. Each habitat was surrounded by dense bamboo and mature trees, providing a comfortable environment for the animals.

The giant pandas displayed a variety of behaviours. Some lounged lazily on wooden platforms, seemingly enjoying the morning sunshine. Others wandered through the enclosure searching for fresh bamboo shoots. Several pandas could be seen sitting upright, expertly holding bamboo stalks between their paws while methodically stripping away the outer layers before eating.

Watching Feeding Time
One of the highlights of the morning was observing the feeding sessions. Keepers supplied fresh bamboo, bamboo shoots, and specially prepared panda cakes to supplement the animals' diet.
As soon as food was delivered, several pandas became noticeably more active. They approached the feeding areas, selected their favourite bamboo stalks, and settled down to eat. It was fascinating to see how each panda seemed to have its own eating habits and preferences.
Educational displays nearby explained that an adult giant panda can consume enormous quantities of bamboo every day, spending much of its waking hours feeding. Watching them patiently work through pile after pile of bamboo made these facts easy to appreciate.

Meeting the Red Pandas
After spending time with the giant pandas, I headed to the red panda habitat. Although often overshadowed by their larger cousins, the red pandas proved equally captivating.

Their reddish fur contrasted beautifully against the green forest surroundings. Unlike the giant pandas, the red pandas were highly agile, moving gracefully through tree branches and elevated walkways. Several were resting in the trees, curled up with their bushy tails wrapped around their bodies, while others explored the enclosure in search of food.

Learning at the Panda Scientific Discovery Centre
To better understand the work being carried out at the base, I visited the Panda Scientific Discovery Centre. The modern exhibits explained the biology, evolution, and conservation of giant pandas through interactive displays and informative presentations.

I learned about habitat protection efforts, genetic research, breeding programmes, and the challenges of maintaining healthy panda populations both in captivity and in the wild. The exhibits offered valuable insight into the extensive scientific work that supports panda conservation throughout China.

A Perfect Morning in Chengdu
By late morning, visitor numbers had increased considerably, and many of the pandas had begun settling down for their midday rest. After one final walk through the bamboo-lined pathways, I made my way back toward the exit and took a taxi back to the city.
The visit to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) was undoubtedly one of the most memorable experiences of my Chengdu (成都) journey. From watching playful cubs in the nursery and observing giant pandas enjoying their bamboo feasts to meeting the charming red pandas and learning about conservation efforts, the morning provided an excellent balance of wildlife, education, and relaxation.
