Travel Guide to Phuket Half Day City Tour with Private Transport

Day 1

It was the year end school holiday, and we were going on a 7D6N holiday trip to Thailand, covering Phuket and Bangkok. This time round, it consisted of our extended family members, accounting to more than 10 pax in total. Our trip would be partly free and easy, and for some days engaging local travel companies for day tours. We departed Singapore on a 2 hour Jetstar Asia flight to Phuket in the early morning.

Phuket is a very popular tourist destination for many travelers around the world, famous for its pristine beaches (especially at the surrounding smaller islands) and tropical scenery. Phuket may not be the cheapest place in Thailand, but it certainly has loads of attractions and activities catered for tourists.

Saladee Gallery Residence

We had arranged with a local company Phuket Travel Company for the day tours in Phuket, as well as the airport-hotel transfers. As soon as we cleared the immigration at Phuket International Airport, we were greeted by the drivers waiting for us. Since we were a large group, we were split into 2 minibuses to transfer us to our hotel at Patong, which was around a 1 hour drive.

We would be staying at Saladee Gallery Residence at Patong throughout our stay in Phuket. It is rather small hotel, but we had selected this hotel due to its excellent location, being strategically located near the heart of Patong (Bangla Road), Jungceylon Shopping Center and of course the Patong beach itself. The price of the rooms was also very affordable, and they had excellent reviews from Tripadvisor. We checked in the hotel and were allocated the rooms, which was clean and neat.

We did not stay long in our rooms. We headed to the Lucky Restaurant just beside our hotel to have our lunch, which sells a mixture of Thai, Chinese, Indian and Arabic cuisine. The serving of the food was rather slow (despite our group was the only customers there), but eventually we managed to finish up the food just before the transport arrived to pick us up for the tour.

Phuket Old Town

The Half-Day Phuket City Tour program with Phuket Travel Company kicked off with a visit to Phuket Old Town, which was around an hour drive (by minibus) from our hotel. We were dropped off along Thalang Road, which is considered as the heart of Phuket Old Town. The street is narrow and lined by two rows of heritage shophouses. Many of these shophouses are converted to hotels, cafes, restaurants, boutique clothing shops, souvenir, and handicraft shops. Unfortunately, we were only given 30 min to tour the area, which we had mainly spent our time visiting a couple of shops.

Big Bee Farm Phuket

Next, we headed to the Big Bee Farm Phuket, which is around 20 min drive from Phuket Old Town. The tour began with a short tour around the compound, where we were introduced the different types of honeybees and bee farming.

The staff also showed us the beehives with lots of bees, where we could take photos of it.

After this, we were led to a small showroom where the staff would introduce their honey products and the associated health benefits. We did not buy any products from the salesperson and exited the showroom towards the main shop, where they had more honey products (royal jelly, pollen, vinegar, tea, chocolates, and ice-cream etc).

Personally, I felt this place was more of a shop rather than a farm. But nevertheless, it was still interesting to see the honeybees at close-up and learn about the bees and honey products.

Cashew Nut Factory

We boarded our transport and took a short 3 min ride to the next stop, Cashew Nut Factory.

The area is not very big, with one side the cashew processing area and the other side the retail shop. We could see a several ladies operating the machine to crack the nuts. After this, it was sampling tasting and browsing through their huge variety of flavoured cashew nuts and other local produce.

The nuts were tasty and some of us ended up buying some of the nuts. After the short shopping activity, we headed back to our transport to the next destination.

Wat Chalong

Our next destination was Wat Chalong, which is just a short 10 min drive away. So far I felt the places I had visited were mainly shopping related, so I was really looking forward to the next destination. Wat Chalong (officially known as Wat Chaithararam) is the largest, and most popular and visited Buddhist temple in Phuket. The temple was built in the 19th century, dedicated to 2 monks Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang.

From the carpark, we first passed by the main temple, which is the Ubosot. This building is closed for visitors, as only the monks can enter to perform ceremonial services. Nevertheless, we were happy to take photos from outside and admired the architectural design, which consist of very decorative tiered roofs.

thailand, phuket, wat chalong, ubosot

The next building opposite is the Viharn, which has a similar architectural design as the Ubosot. In addition, there are several elephant statues at the entrance. The temple is open to public and house the bronze statues of the 3 most revered abbots of the temple, where visitors can make their prayers.

Occasionally, we could hear loud 'explosion' that sounded like firecrackers coming from the brick oven in front of the temple. The locals would buy and lit the firecrackers in the oven, and the loud sound signifies that the prayer was heard and answered.

The last building we would visit in the complex is the Chedi, which is a magnificent 60m tall temple.

The temple is open to public and has 3 levels. The first two levels contain many Buddha statues. The roof and walls were painted with murals that depicts the life and teachings of Buddha. The 3rd level is an open terrace, which we could see the entire Wat Chalong complex, as well as the surrounding mountainous scenery.

The most important piece of sacred relic that makes the temple special is stored in the glass chamber located here, which is a piece of Buddha's bone fragment. It was brought from Sri Lanka and installed here by then Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. After this, we exited the temple and headed for our transport to the next destination.

Phuket Big Buddha

Our next destination was the Phuket Big Buddha, which was another 20 min drive winding up the mountainous roads. The Big Buddha is a white coloured Maravija Buddha statue in a seated position, measuring 45m tall and 25.5m wide. It is located on top of the Nakkerd Hill, facing the Chalong Bay, making it an excellent viewpoint of the surrounding area and thus one of the most popular tourist attraction in Phuket.

Walking up from the carpark, we arrived at a large open terrace where we got an unblocked view of the eastern coast of Phuket, more specifically Chalong Bay and the surrounding smaller islands.

From here, the flight of stairs (also known as the Stairway to Heaven) leads up to the upper terrace where the base of the Big Buddha is located.

Over here, visitors could make prayers and offerings to the Buddha. At the other side of the statue, we could also get a view of the western coast of Phuket, covering the Karon and Kata Beach area.

After this, we headed back to the transport and departed for our last attraction of the tour, Promthep Cape.

Promthep Cape

Promthep Cape is located at the southern end of Phuket, which was around 30 min drive from the Big Buddha. It is famous for its sunset viewpoint, and that was exactly the same reason we were going there for. When we arrived at the viewpoint, it was still early for the sunset. But as the time goes by, more and more visitors (both locals and foreign tourists) started pouring into the area to catch the sunset view. From the viewpoint, we could enjoy the sea breeze and beautiful sunset across the Andaman Sea.

We had requested our travel agency to book our dinner with Phromthep Cape Restaurant, which is just a short walking distance from the view point. The tables were located outdoor facing the coast, so we had the opportunity to continue enjoying the sunset view while waiting for our dinner to be served.

Our reserved table

We ordered several of authentic Thai food such as Seafood Tom Yum, Green Curry Chicken, Stir Fried Chicken, Pineapple Fried Rice, as well as some fries and chicken nuggets for the kids. The food was good and the prices (although higher than other places in Phuket due to its prime location) were within expectation. However, there was one big problem with the place, which there were a lot of mosquitoes in the area, which many of us were badly bitten. Although the staff tried to put several mosquito coils around our table, that was still in vain. This had dampened the entire dining experience, which would have otherwise been a perfect dining event.

The conclusion of our dinner marked the end of our tour. We were picked up by the transport and headed back to our hotel. The journey would take around 45 min. With a full stomach and after a long and tired day, many of us quickly fell asleep during the journey. Upon arrival of our hotel, most of us decided to retire early, except a few young ones who were still energetic and continued to explore the lively street surrounding our hotel.

Ueno Park: One of the best place to see Cherry Blossom in Tokyo

Day 10

This was the last day of our vacation in Japan. Since our flight back to Singapore was in the evening, we still got ample time in the morning to travel around in Tokyo. We had the complimentary breakfast at our Hotel Sardonyx Ueno. The hotel do not serve buffet for the breakfast, but we could choose from a few set meals, which include hot dog bun, pancakes or toast bread with soup and beverage. The breakfast was simple, but good enough to fill us up for the morning. We checked our room before leaving the luggage with the lobby, before we headed out to a nearby attraction, Ueno Park.

Ueno Park

Ueno Park is a large public park that is more than the usual greenery park we know of. It houses the Ueno Zoo, several shrines and large museums, Shinobazuno Pond and more importantly, it is one of the most popular place in Tokyo to view the Cherry Blossom! We started our tour of the park at the southern end near the Shitamachi Musuem, then walked around the Shinobazuno Pond in a clockwise direction and through the dividing pathway in the middle of the pond.

We were delighted to find many full bloomed cherry trees in the park, stopping every few steps to take photographs of the magnificent view of the cherry blossom.

We exited the pond and entered the central pathway that leads to the Tokyo National Museum. Over here, we could find more cherry trees that lined the sides of the pathway. Due to shortage of time, we decided to end the tour of the park and headed to the nearby Ueno Station (上野駅). From there, we took the JR Yamanote Line on a short ride to Akihabara JR Station (秋葉原駅).

Akihabara

Akihabara (秋葉原) is a popular shopping district in Tokyo that specialize in electronic products, manga, anime and video games. We could see many billboards and advertisements along the streets related to these themes, including cosplay-themed maid cafes.

tokyo akihabara
Colourful billboards and advertisements filled the facade of the buildings at Akihabara

It was interesting that we could find shops selling very old Nintendo and SEGA game cartridges over here. As this was our last site before we go to the airport later, we spent some time doing our last minute shopping for souvenirs at the shops and departmental stores.

Lunch

Near to lunch time, we went to The Granvania, which is a maid-themed cafe. Unfortunately, the cafe was closed for private function that day and we weren't able to patronize. Leaving the cafe disappointed, we wandered around the nearby street and eventually settled at the KFC fast food restaurant. That was our second fast food meal in Japan, after the McDonald's lunch in Osaka. Other than the regular fried chicken set meals, we also ordered something special we don't find in Singapore, which was the Chicken Pot Pie. It contains cream stew with chicken, potatoes, corn, and onion, wrapped in a crispy puff, a very good choice for someone who wanted something simpler and not fried.

Good Bye Japan

After our lunch, we headed back to Hotel Sardonyx Ueno by the JR train to collect our stored luggage from the hotel reception. We passed through the streets of Ueno and made a short walking journey to the Keisei Ueno Station (京成上野駅).

We refunded all our PASMO cards at the station, before we exchanged for the pre-paid Keisei Skyliner tickets to Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station (成田空港駅). The train journey to the airport would take around 43 min and all of us took the opportunity to have a short nap on the ride.

In summary, we had a very enjoyable 10 days grand tour in Japan. It wasn't easy for a large group to travel around in free and easy mode, and I would say we had successfully traveled accordingly to our planned itinerary. The local people we met here were very nice and would like to thank all the Airbnb hosts we had in the trip for their hospitality. This is definitely not our last visit to Japan, and we wished we could be back soon in the near future for another amazing tour.

One Day Travel Guide to Tokyo DisneySea

Day 9

This was an exciting day for us as we would visit Tokyo DisneySea. Most people in the travel group had not visited a Disneyland theme park before (for me I had visited Hong Kong Disneyland more than 10 years ago), so everyone was really looking forward to the visit.

We had our complimentary breakfast at our Hotel Sardonyx Ueno before heading out for the transportation. We walked to Naka-okachimachi Metro Station (仲御徒町駅) and took the Hibiya Line (H) to Hatchobori Metro Station (八丁堀駅), transfer to the Hatchobori JR Station then travel on JR Keiyo line to Maihama Station (舞浜駅). Maihama Station will be the main gateway to the Tokyo Disney Resort.

Tokyo Disney Resort

Tokyo Disney Resort is a huge entertainment venue that comprise of the twin theme parks, Disneyland and DisneySea, Disney hotels (such as Tokyo Disneyland Hotel and Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCoasta) and Disney partner hotels (such as Hilton Tokyo Bay and Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel). Do you know that while there are several Disneyland theme parks around the world, there is only one DisneySea theme park in world, and that is located in Tokyo, Japan! Tokyo DisneySea has also been rated as the best theme park in the world by many travel guides and blogs. This is the reason why we had chosen to visit DisneySea instead of Disneyland (due to the fact that we only have time to visit one of the parks).

At the Maihama Station (舞浜駅), it is still a distance away to our destination (DisneySea). The resort has its own rail line (Disney Resort Line) that brings visitors to different parts of the resort. The monorail runs in anti-clockwise loop, starting from Resort Gateway Station (short walking distance from Maihama Station (舞浜駅)) to Tokyo Disneyland Station, Bayside Station and lastly Tokyo DisneySea Station.

The monorail ride itself was enjoyable, as we got to see some of the theme park attractions, hotels, and the sea view of Tokyo Bay while we travel to the last station.

Tokyo DisneySea

As we had already purchased the park tickets online and printed the e-Ticket Passports, we headed straight to the park entry gates to enter the park. Immediately after we entered the DisneySea Plaza at the entrance, we were lucky to see Disney characters (Minnie Mouse, Chip 'n' Dale, Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pluto and Marie) walking around on Meet and Greet session! Everyone was very excited and started to take out the cameras to take photographs of them, or with them.

The entire park was very crowded (with majority being local Japanese), which we were very surprised as we were there on a weekday. But because it was during the spring vacation, we could see a lot of students and families in the park.

We walked towards the American Waterfront sector looking forward to the first ride of our day, Toy Story Mania!. When we arrived at the destination, we were astonished to find that the standby queue was literally hours long and even the FASTPASS for the day were sold out! That was only at around 9.40am in the morning!

tokyo disneysea toy story mania

The FASTPASS is a free service that is included in the ticket, which allows visitor to apply to return to the attraction at a later specific time. Visitor can then explore other parts of the park instead of waiting physically in the queue. As we assessed it wasn't worth spending hours in the standby queue for the Toy Story Mania!, we went to the Tower of Terror that is located just beside us. Even the next available FASTPASS ride there was at 5.35pm in the evening, sensing that this could be the same situation across the park, we decided to quickly apply the FASTPASS tickets at the ticketing machine.

Aquatopia

After we secured the FASTPASS tickets to Tower of Terror, we continued to explore the park further into the Port Discovery sector. We decided to join in the standby queue at Aquatopia, which wasn't that bad.

We managed to board the ride around 1 hour of waiting time. This is a watercraft ride within a water lagoon. The watercraft ride (which can accommodate up to 3 person) is trackless, will accelerate at times, spin and narrowly avoid obstacles and other crafts in the lagoon. Overall, it was a fun and thrilling ride.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

Next, we headed to the Mysterious Island sector. We had a short break and bought some Mickey and Minnie ice pops before joining the standby queue for the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

This is a "submarine" ride (which carries up to 6 persons) to explore the depth of the ocean floor. The ride does not physically go into water, but there are bubble effects that makes visitor feels that the submarine is moving through water environment. After encountering a giant octopus attack, the submarine ventured into the legendary sunken Atlantis, where we can find native aquatic beings living there.

Lunch at Triton's Kingdom (Mermaid Lagoon)

After the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride, we headed to the Triton's Kingdom at Mermaid Lagoon sector. Triton's Kingdom is a Little Mermaid themed indoor area that consist of kids friendly rides, shops and restaurant.

As it was already lunch time, we decided to patronize the Sebastian's Calypso Kitchen for lunch. As expected, the area was packed with people. The queue to place the food orders was long and there were hardly any available tables. We decided to split into 2 groups, which one would go and secure the next FASTPASS tickets for The Magic Lamp Theater, while and other group helped buy the lunch. We bought the Easter special set lunch, which came with roasted chicken burger with egg, fries, and soft drink.

The Magic Lamp Theater

After lunch, we toured around some of the souvenir shops at Triton's Kingdom, before heading to the Arabian Coast sector. Along the way, we were lucky to see "Prince Eric" from The Little Mermaid taking photographs with the visitors. However, Ariel was nowhere to be seen.

We arrived at The Magic Lamp Theater and waited a while for our FASTPASS timeslot.

Entrance to The Magic Lamp Theater

The Magic Lamp Theater is a stage cum 3D movie show, that stars a magician called Shaban and Genie from the Disney film Aladdin. To our disappointment, the entire show was in Japanese, thus we could only guess what was happening most of the time. Here's what I learnt online about the show after my trip. A pre-show started with a cobra telling a story about the magician (Shaban) and how Genie became his assistant, and over time locked him inside the lamp due to his jealously. The audience were then led to the seating in the hall for the main live-action stage show. After some magic shows, Shaban's servant Aseem released Genie from the lamp, which appeared on the screen. Genie eventually made Shaban disappear and eventually making Aseem as his new master. After the show, we were fortunate to find the characters Aladdin and Jafar outside the theater meeting and greeting the visitors.

Sindbad's Storybook Voyage

After The Magic Lamp Theater, we joined a short queue at the nearby attraction, Sindbad's Storybook Voyage. The attraction is based on the story Sindbad The Sail, which is an indoor boat ride that was fairly long. The boat ride would bring visitors through Sindbad's travel adventure with his pet tiger, Chandu. The scenes include Sindbad's encounter with the Roc Egg thieves, the Green Giant, Monkey Island, and Whale. They were many animatronic displays in each scene that kept our cameras busy, which were very decorative and impressive.

Tower of Terror

After our boat ride, it was already close to FASTPASS timeslot for the Tower of Terror. We made way back to the American Waterfront sector, while enjoying the sunset scenery around the Mediterranean Harbour.

I wasn't sure what the Tower of Terror attraction was about when we applied the FASTPASS earlier. Only when I entered the attraction and queued inside, then I realized it is a ride that involves free fall! That was going to be my first free fall ride of my life! The attraction is housed inside a tall building, which is named as Hotel Hightower.

tokyo disneysea tower of terror elevator
Tower of Terror

The story goes by the hotel was cursed for over 100 years, when a statute caused the original owner Mr Hightower to mysteriously go missing after the elevator he was in crashed to the ground. The New York City Preservation Society now re-opened the hotel for "visitors" to view Mr Hightower's collection of treasures. The queue to the ride itself would bring the visitors through the treasures.

Exhibits along the queue inside the building

At the end of the tour, visitors were brought to the 20-seater elevator ride. After we buckled our seatbelts, the elevator moved up the tower. Along the way up, we would encounter the cursed statue animation. After the statue casted the spell on us, the elevator would move to the top of the tower and the door opened. We would get to see the view of the DisneySea park from the shattered window. Immediately after this, the elevator suddenly dropped in a free fall! The elevator then moved up the tower again and repeated another free fall drop. Everyone in the elevator were simply screaming at top of our voices! After the thrill, the elevator was safely brought to the ground and the ride ended.

Dinner @ Ikspiari Kitchen (イクスピアリ・キッチン)

As we exited the Tower of Terror, the sky was already dark and started raining. We wanted to visit some of the souvenir shops but there were long queues just to enter the shops. We decided to call it a day at DisneySea as we were already exhausted after a long day of walking and queuing at the park, as well as the bad weather prevented us from exploring the park further.

tokyo disneysea night mount prometheus

We exited the park and took the Disney Resort Line from Tokyo DisneySea Station to Resort Gateway Station. Just beside the Resort Gateway Station is a large shopping mall called Ikspiari and we decided to search for a dinner place in the mall. We came across the Ikspiari Kitchen (イクスピアリ・キッチン) at the first floor, which is basically a food court selling Japanese, Chinese and Western food. We settled down and started ordering our food to eat, such as Japanese curry omelette rice, Ramen and chicken chop.

As we finished our dinner and headed outside the mall, the rain had stopped and the night sky brightened up with the fireworks display from the Tokyo Disney Resort. It was a pity that we did not get to watch fireworks display with the magical animations and classical Disney music inside the park, as we thought the show would be cancelled because of the rain earlier. Nevertheless, we were glad that we could still watch part of the display from the mall.

In conclusion, we had an enjoyable day at Tokyo DisneySea and a dream came true for some of us. The experience was far from perfect due to the large crowd and long queues in the park that had excluded us from some of the popular attractions. Recommendation to others visiting Tokyo DisneySea in the future will be to do your research first and strategize the sequence of the rides and FASTPASS usage. If you have the time, plan for a 2-day visit to the park, as it is really a big park and unlikely to cover everything within one day.

With the finale of the fireworks display, we bid farewell to Tokyo Disney Resort and headed back to our Hotel Sardonyx Ueno, retracing the same way how we came here in the morning.
