Planning a Free and Easy Tour - Part 5 of 5 (Maps and Travel Insurance)

Importance of Map

Travelling in a free and easy trip means that there is no tour guide along with you, thus you have to depend on yourself while travelling from one point to another. As you are in a foreign land, having a map with you is extremely important to navigate around. There are several means that can help you navigate around:

1. Use Google Map

Google Map should be your first choice for planning your navigation. It is free to use and its direction function provides you in detail the available modes of transportation (walking, car and/or train) to get from one point to the other, in addition the distance and the estimated travelling time. If you intend to use mobile data while travelling, then you can gain access to Google Map on your smart phone or tablet. Note that access to Google is restricted or partially restricted in certain countries. In this case, you can print screen the Google Map direction and save it in your smart phone or tablet while you are still at your home country. Alternatively, you can also print out hardcopies of the Google Map, so that you do not have to worry that your device's battery runs out and unable to access the digital maps.

2. Use Online Maps

Some of the city government or tourism boards may post their city maps online (in JPG or PDF format) on their websites. These maps are helpful as they typically show the locations of the major tourist attractions and even hotels. You can also find many more maps online when your search for images in the search engine. For example, if you are going to Bangkok, type "bangkok tourist map" in the search engine to look for images and you will find a lot of different maps. Some of them are also physical maps that some visitors have scanned and posted online. Download the appropriate ones (those with good resolution and serve your needs) to your smart phone or tablet. Similarly, you may also want to print them as hardcopies and bring along your travel.

3. Use Hardcopy Maps

Travel guides like Lonely Planet will have maps integrated as part of the book. Since you will be having your travel guide along, thus you can use these maps to help you navigate around. When you landed at the airport, you may find there are free hardcopy tourist maps available for tourist. You will also find some of these free tourist maps in hotels and major tourist attractions. If you are looking for something more professional, then you can purchase proper maps from Periplus for example. Something to take note, since you need to plan your tour upfront at your home country, you will need your map much earlier and cannot depend solely on the physical tourist map when you reach your destination.

Importance of Travel Insurance

As you travel, there are a lot of unpredictable events (flight delay/cancellation, theft, loss of belongings, medical needs etc.) that might happen and disrupts your travel plan. Although money cannot solve everything, but at least you will be compensated in some monetary form when you have a travel insurance to protect yourself from the unfortunate events. Therefore it's highly recommended that you get one for your travel. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to purchase directly from the Internet. The basic insurance plan is typically sufficient for most travelers, unless you have expensive jewelry or golf set along with you.

Planning a Free and Easy Tour - Part 4 of 5 (Attractions and Activities)

Planning the Attractions and Activities

Planning of the travel activities and attractions to visit for the free and easy tour is very much dependent on individual's preference. Some would prefer a slower tempo, such as spending time quietly at the lush green hotel pool side, reading your favourite book or enjoying a glass of cocktail, others would prefer a frenzy shopping trip or embark on a mountain trek for the nature lovers. Nevertheless, the following tips can be considered to plan how you can spend your day at the travel destination:

1. Look out for the Popular Attractions

Every location is well-known and popular for its own unique characteristics. For example, Hong Kong (China) is famous for its metropolitan city skyline, shopping malls/streets and the delicious Cantonese cuisine, London (UK) is famous for its world class museums and musical plays, and Siem Reap (Cambodia) is famous for the Angkor Wat, which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can find out the destinations' top tourist attractions from various sources. The first way is through travel magazines or guide books like Lonely Planet. They will provide you with quite a lot of details such as the background/history of the attractions, their significance, what you can do and see over there, how to get to the site and photographs of the site. The second way is to visit the official tourism board websites. Most of the city government/tourism board would have websites to introduce the popular attractions and activities to do within their city or country. The third way is through independent travel websites. Just type in location's name in the Google Search and you can easily find many of them listed on the page. Even the Wikitravel pages (which I often use for my own planning) are useful for you. The fourth way is to take reference from the offerings of the real travel agents. These travel agents would have posted their travel itineraries online, so that you can easily make comparisons with them to decide the popular attractions that you can visit.

2. Filter and Select the Attractions/Activities

You will have a long list of attractions and activities recommended from various sources. Now you will need to shortlist some of them based on the following criteria. First, if you have no much interest in history, paintings and artifacts, then most probably you will give museums a miss. The recommendations would encompass all sorts of attractions and activities, ranging from museums to sea sports or theme park visits. Depending on your own preference, you have to shortlist those attractions and activities that interest you. Second, depending on your available time and budget you have planned for, you have to further trim down the list that will fit into your travel plan. Third, a particular attraction looks awesome from the various recommendation sources, but the admission fee is very costly and you are doubtful if the visit is worthwhile. Well, similar to checking the hotel reviews, you can check with Tripadvisor to go through the feedbacks and reviews provided by hundreds and thousands of travelers who had visited the attraction previously to determine is it of any value to visit the attraction. One advice from me is that you should not miss out any attraction that is iconic to the location. For example the Great Wall in Beijing (China), the Sydney Opera House in Sydney (Australia) and Eiffel Tower in Paris (France) are must-visit attractions if you are visiting these locations the first time.

3. Arrange the Sequence for the Attractions and Activities

Once you have shortlisted your attractions and activities to do, you have to slot them into your travel plan. The trick here is to group the attractions of close proximity together, so that you can save time and money on the transportation. For example it does not make sense if you have to travel to the east for the first attraction, travel to the west for the second attraction and then back to the east again for your final attraction of the day! You can simply use Google Map or any other maps available to check the approximate locations of the attractions. You have to take considerations of the transportation time from one attraction to another in the planning as well. Nowadays Google Map allows you to check the travelling distance and time between 2 locations by walking, bus, train or car (taxi), so it is very convenient for you to perform this check easily. You should also check the opening and closing time for the respective attractions, so that you plan the sequence which attractions should be visited in the morning or evening. In addition, some attractions may be closed on a particular day of the month for maintenance, so it is important to check the admission information so that you do not disappoint yourself to find out the attraction is closed only when you reached there.

4. Meals

While you travel, you still have to take a break to have your meals. Personally, I am not so particular about the choice of food. Most of the time during my own free and easy travel, I will have my lunch and dinner at the attraction or near the attraction, while breakfast is typically at the hotel. I prefer local food, so that you can have a taste of the authentic local delight and cuisines. Each city or destination may be famous for a particular food, which you may want to try it out. For example the Quanjude's Peking duck in Beijing (China), Cha Ca La Vong's grilled fish in Hanoi (Vietnam) and the Jumbo Seafood Restaurant's Chili Crab in Singapore are all iconic dishes of the respective locations. Similarly to the attractions, you can find more about the popular local food and their locations from travel magazines and guide books like Lonely Planet, online websites, and also the reviews from Tripadvisor.

Planning a Free and Easy Tour - Part 3 of 5 (Hotel)

Booking the Hotel

While planning your free and easy tour, the hotel accommodation selection is a key part of the planning. Booking a hotel by yourself has quite a number of considerations to take note, which I will go through each of them:

1. Hotel Listing

You have decided to visit your dream destination, but where should you stay? What are the hotels available? There's a few ways to go about. The first way is through travel guide books such as Lonely Planet, where different types of hotels within the area will be listed and recommended. The other easier way is to make use of hotel booking websites such as Agoda.com and Booking.com, where you just need to key in your destination and it will provide a long list of hotels available within the city or area. The list of hotels generated by the website filter could be in hundreds or thousands. If you know which particular districts you would want to stay in, the website allows you to filter by the districts to further narrow down the options.

2. Location

Location of the hotel is a very important consideration. The hotel location should preferably be close or easy to commute to the attractions within the area that you would want to visit. If the beach is the main attraction that you would visit, your hotel should then be close to the beach, so that you can simply walk there and without a need to hire a taxi. If there are multiple attractions that you would want to visit in a city by the public transportation, then your hotel should be close (within walking distance) to a metro station or bus stop. Simply use Google Map to check on the hotel location. For the shortlisted hotel, you can also use the Google Map Street View function (if available) to look around the hotel's surrounding environment. Check if the hotel is near to any cafes, restaurants and convenience shops, and if it is easily accessible from the main road. If you have been screening through the hotel list from hotel booking websites like Agoda.com and Booking.com, they already have Google Map embedded in their website, which they will show you the location of the hotel you are looking at, as well as other hotels within the vicinity. A good located hotel will give you a lot more convenience on your transportation and access to amenities.

3. Budget

Hotel accommodation can constitute to a large part of your entire travel costs. Everyone has different financial background, thus your hotel budget depends on how much you can afford. Using hotel booking websites, you can find hotels with all different prices, ranging from luxurious 5 Star hotels or private villas, to budget bed & breakfast hotel or hostel. Using their website, you can easily filter the selection to list only hotels within your budget.

4. Hotel Review

You may have encountered a hotel which their price is reasonable and the room looks good from the hotel website photos. However, is it really value for money? What about the actual condition of their room and hotel facilities? How is their quality of breakfast and customer/room services? Most likely you will not be the first few to stay in your shortlisted hotel. Hundreds and thousands of visitors would have stayed in that hotel previously, so wouldn't it be good if we can get their feedback? Nowadays, you will see that thousands of people are providing their hotel stay experience in the hotels on travel websites like Agoda.com, Booking.com and Tripadvisor. Anything with more than 100 recent reviews is sufficient to provide a good indication of the actual conditions visitors have experienced. The higher the overall hotel rating, the higher chance you can ensure your stay will be pleasant.

Personally for my own free and easy trips, I have always booked the hotel rooms through hotel booking websites, such as Agoda.com and Booking.com. I will recommend Agoda.com if you are looking for hotels in the Asia Pacific region. Agoda.com specialises in this region, which they have a huge hotel database and they are often the cheapest among other competitors. If you are looking for hotels in Europe, then I will recommend Booking.com.

I have used both Agoda.com and Booking.com before, so far all the bookings are successful and error free. I have already discussed some of the advantages that these websites can offer to you as above, such as ease of making quick comparisons and filter options to focus exactly what you need. In addition, these websites have many more features which make things extremely convenient for the user:
  • You can set the language and currency of your choice on their website
  • You can check the photos of the hotel facilities and the different rooms
  • You can check on the available hotel facilities, as well as the room size and facilities
  • You can see the breakdown of different review ratings, on hotel location, room cleanliness, customer service quality, and whether it is value for money
  • You can see constant streams of discounts for almost all the hotels listed!
  • They will provide add-on information on nearby rail/metro stations, attractions, bar/restaurants
  • Booking the hotel rooms through their website is easy and fast

Planning a Free and Easy Tour - Part 2 of 5 (Flight)

During the planning of your free and easy trip, finalising the travel dates is the number one priority. This is because all other subsequent planning, such as the flight, hotel, transportation and attractions booking requires your firm date of travel. Your travel dates will depend on your own availability, as well as how many destinations and attractions you plan to visit. There's another important factor to consider, which will be your travel budget. The longer you stay at your travel destination, the more you will have to spend on hotel accommodation, meals and transportation.

Booking the Flight

Once you have finalised your travel dates, the next task is to secure your flight to your travel destination. Booking your flight early will give a you better chance to secure the good flight timing that you want, the seats that you would prefer, as well as promotions offered by the airline. Select direct flights if possible, as this will help reduce your overall travel time. Depending on your departure location, a direct flight to your destination might not always be available. So in this case, try to limit to one transit stopover, as having too many transit stops affects your rest/sleep time. In some cases, a direct air ticket could be expensive and out of your budget, then you may want to explore other cheaper alternative routes with transit stop.

You can make use of travel website like Expedia to check on the available flight options from your departure point to your destination. Expedia allows to you to filter the flight options by the price (lowest to highest), number of transit stop and operating airlines. This helps you to quickly nail down the potential choices. Within the filtered option, you can further check on the transit stop details and waiting time, flight seating availability, seat information and review as provided by Seat Guru, flight baggage fee information and the overall flight rating.

Planning a Free and Easy Tour - Part 1 of 5 (Weather/Public Holiday/Passport/Visa)

Planning a free and easy tour requires a lot of time to research and prepare for the travel arrangements. However, it is not difficult at all. For the next coming posts, I will share the tips on how you can plan your own trip.

Weather

The first thing that you should find out is on the weather of the destination during your planned travel period. This is something that many may overlook, but is very important. Although we cannot exactly predict the weather, but based on the historical weather data, we can make some good assessment on the seasonal weather patterns. These data are easily found on the Internet, and even the Wikipedia pages are sufficient to provide you with the basic historical weather data. You should avoid seasons prone to heat wave, heavy monsoon rain, typhoon and snow storm. For example, Taiwan and Philippines are located along the typhoon belt in the Pacific Ocean and they are likely to be affected by typhoon from the months of July to October. These are extreme seasonal weather that will disrupt your travel plans, such as flight cancellation or delays, closure of roads and attractions, and may even put your life at risk.

Public Holiday and Events

The second thing is to find out if there's any major public holiday or event at the destination during your planned travel period. If your objective is to participate the holiday festive celebrations or the events, then that is fine. Otherwise, these festive periods or events may affect your travel plans and you may want to avoid them. Firstly during these popular festive periods or event, many local and international tourists will flock to the destination. This is going to drive up the costs of hotel accommodation and room availability will be limited. Nearby restaurants and attractions will be packed with people, and transportation tickets like bus or train tickets will also run out fast. Secondly, some of the major events will also lead to road/area closures and making some of the places you intend to go impassable. Certainly you do not want the above mentioned to affect your travel plan if you have no intention to participate in these events.

Passport Validity and Visa Requirement

Other administrative things to take note include your passport validity on arrival and visa requirement. Many countries require visitor's passport validity of no less than 6 months of arrival. Another headache is to verify whether you need a tourist visa to enter the country and the maximum stay period allowed in the country. I have friends and colleagues who previously have to abandon their trip and return back home because they did not check on the visa requirements to the country. This is something you have to avoid. Any hotel, transportation and attractions fees that were paid upfront are gone, and your trip is ruined.

Free and Easy vs Package Group Tour

You have been eyeing your favourite oversea holiday destination for some time and you have decided to go for it. However, should you contact a travel agent to book a tour package or organise a free and easy tour by yourself?

By booking your tour through a travel agent, you will enjoy the benefit and ease by selecting from a number of standard tour itineraries prepared by the travel agent. Select the itinerary that you like and fits your budget and schedule, pay the fee and there's nothing else to worry again. The rest of the details will be handled by the travel agent. On the other hand, planning a free and easy tour will require you to arrange everything by yourself, which includes booking of flight, hotel, attractions and transportation.
Although it requires some efforts to prepare a free and easy tour, it is actually quite easy to do it as many of the arrangements can be done through the Internet nowadays. In addition, I would like to share some of the benefits for preparing your own free and easy tour:

1. You choose your own travel itinerary

The biggest advantage is you get to decide where you want to go, what you want to do and how you want to spend your time at the destination. Depending on your own interest, you can plan more museum visits if you like to know more about the local culture and history, spend more time on the beach if you are a beach lover and like to try out different types of sea sports, spend your time at a theme park if you enjoy thrilling rides, or have more time shopping around the malls and shopping streets if you are a shopaholic. You may also have the option to experience the normal life of the locals by commuting via the local transportation modes like metro, or attend a cooking class that teaches you how to prepare and cook a popular local dish.

Tour itineraries from travel agent are often fixed (although some may allow minor adjustments and customisation), and not all the attractions or activities may be of interest to you. Since there's a fixed itinerary to follow, you also don't get to extend your stay at a particular attraction if you really want to explore the area in more detail. When the tour group is large, it's quite often that some other tour members would come back late to the assembly point, thus leading to delay to the subsequent tour itineraries. It is also quite often that "additional" itineraries will be added to the tour group that you are not aware of initially, such as visit to jewelry, handicraft and souvenir shops etc. If that's something you like and enjoy, that's fine, otherwise these are taking away time that could have spent on actual travel itineraries.

2. You choose your own accommodation

Everyone has their own preference to their home interior design, thus that's no difference when you are travelling on the requirements of your hotel accommodation. You may want to spend your private time with your love ones at a luxurious villa that comes with your own private swimming pool, hotel room that comes with balcony facing the beach or garden, or a hotel based on a nostalgia theme etc. In addition, almost all hotels have their presence on the Internet, major online hotel platforms such as Agoda.com, Booking.com and Tripadvisor provide extensive archives of hotel reviews, which allows you to evaluate a potential hotel's service quality, facility conditions, room cleanliness, meal options and location etc, based on the inputs provided by other travelers who had previously stayed in that hotel. This ensures that you get to select an accommodation with the best value.

If you are on a group tour, normally you do not get to choose your accommodation. Even if a choice is given, you are typically given handful choices from a list the travel agent works with. As compared to booking through the online platforms, you can select from almost all the accommodations available within the area of your stay.

3. You choose your own meals

Everyone has their own preference on meals. Due to your own personal reasons, some may not be able to consume seafood or some other meats. During a free and easy trip, you simply decide what you can and want to eat for your 3 meals. You can have your meal along a popular local food street, a quick bite at your favourite fast food like MacDonald's or Subway, or a lavish fine dining at a Michelin star restaurant.

If you are on a group tour, meals are typically fixed at a particular restaurant to accommodate the majority of the group members. Based on your own taste, you may or may not like them. However, I have seen in recent years where there has been a trend to embed a few meals at the choice of the group members when they are to have their meal during a free and easy breakout at a particular destination.

4. You control your own budget

If you are on tight budget for the travel, you will be able to adjust the overall costs when you travel on free and easy. Apart from the itinerary, hotel accommodation and meals selections mentioned above, you can also achieve some cost savings from the flight by taking no frills budget airlines, or snap up an irresistible promotion from the airline. Choice of local transportation modes also helps you to control your budget.

5. You get to know more about your travel destination

Planning a free and easy trip requires you to research in advance on the attractions and tour area. While doing that through the Internet, books or magazines, you also get to know more about the history of the attraction/destination, its historical and cultural significance, what special highlights to look out for and what local specialties you can buy before you set foot over there.

Other than handling all the travel arrangements by your own, another popular trend is to opt for a kind of hybrid between packaged group tour and free and easy. This includes purchasing the flight and hotel online, while land tour package will be purchased from a local travel agent at the destination. This kind of travel arrangement is popular in two conditions. Firstly, the public transportation system of the destination is not very developed. Attractions could be inaccessible by public transport (e.g. located far and deep in a mountain range or countryside) and is too costly to travel there by private taxi. Secondly, majority of the local population does not speak and understand English or other languages you are familiar with. This also includes road signs and restaurant menu written in their native languages you simply do not understand. Travelling totally free and easy by your own to these places can be very challenging. A local packaged tour will typically include a local tour guide that helps you to bridge the communication gap.

Top 3 Must Visit Attractions in Taipei

Day 8

On Day 8, Topology Travel (真程旅行社) is back again to take us around Taipei, which is officially our last day of tour. As usual, we had our breakfast at the hotel first, before we hopped onto the coach to begin the tour.

Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂)

Our first stop of the day is the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂), which is a national monument and considered as a must visit tourist attraction in Taipei. The memorial hall is completed in 1980 in memory of Chiang Kai-Shek (蔣介石), the former President of the Republic of China. We arrived at the main arch gate of the Liberty Square (自由廣場), which is a big public plaza where the memorial hall is located at the eastern end. We took a group photo here before walking towards the memorial hall, which we can feel the strong wind and chill when walking through the open square.

At both sides of the square, it is flanked by the National Concert Hall and the National Theater, which are constructed in traditional Chinese architectural style.

Upon reaching the memorial hall, we walked up the stairs and entered the Bronze Statue Hall. Over here, we could see a giant bronze statue of Chiang Kai-Shek in seated posture, flanked by guards.

After the ceremony, we proceeded to the lower level, where there are several exhibition halls that showcase Chiang Kai-Shek's personal life, his military career during Japanese Occupation Resistance and the Chinese Civil War period, and the time during his presidency of the Republic of China.

After the exhibition visit, we exited the memorial hall and went back to our coach, as we depart for an early lunch.

Shin Yeh Restaurant (欣葉台菜)

We arrived at the Shin Yeh Restaurant located at Shuangcheng Street, which was already crowded with locals and other tour groups.

The restaurant specialised on Taiwanese dishes, which the fried turnip omelete, braised pork (lurou) and braised squid with bamboo shoot and mushrooms in thick soup are the popular ones. We basically ordered their specialties and other vegetable dishes.

National Palace Museum (國立故宮博物院)

After the lunch, we departed for the next attraction, National Palace Museum (國立故宮博物院). The museum is another must visit tourist attraction in Taipei and it has a collection of close to 700,000 pieces of ancient Chinese artifacts and artworks, spanning over 10,000 years of Chinese history from the Neolithic age to the late Qing dynasty. As the collection is so large, only 1% of the pieces can be exhibited in the museum at any given time! These national treasures were brought to Taipei from mainland China between 1948-1949 when Chiang Kai-Shek's government came to Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War period. Although they only consist of a portion of the treasures originally housed in the Forbidden City in Beijing, they are the finest and high quality collections.

The whole museum was packed with visitors, and we queued for quite some time before we got the tickets and audio devices. Our tour guide brought us through various exhibition halls, covering bronze artifacts, porcelain, jade artifacts, paintings, Chinese calligraphy and rare books. It was really an eye-opener for most of us. Out of the many exhibits, the Cauldron of Duke of Mao (毛公鼎), Jadeite Cabbage (翠玉白菜) and Meat-Shaped Stone (肉形石) are the top 3 treasures in the museum.

After the tour of the museum, we visited the souvenir shop for some shopping.

Shilin Night Market (士林夜市)

We exited the museum, hopped onto the coach and depart for the last attraction of the day, Shilin Night Market (士林夜市). Shilin Night Market is the largest and most popular night market in Taipei. Similar to other night markets, it has a large section dedicated to food vendors selling many favourite Taiwanese local snacks, like fried chicken steak, oyster omelet, oyster vermicelli, stinky tofu, small sausage in big sausage and bubble tea etc. Along the smaller streets and lanes, there are many shops selling clothes, bags, shoes and accessories etc.

Since it was our last night in Taipei, everyone went on a final shopping spree before we wrapped up the day and return to the hotel.

Day 9

There's no planned tour on Day 9 as we need to catch an early afternoon flight back to Singapore. So after our breakfast, we basically spent the remaining time in the hotel rooms packing up before we depart for the airport arranged by Topology Travel (真程旅行社). It had been enjoyable tour in Taiwan for everyone, which was filled with a mixture of historical, cultural, nature and shopping experiences. Final appreciation to Topology Travel (真程旅行社) who arranged the majority of the travel and the great hospitality of the tour guides and driver.
